WooCommerce High Risk Payment Gateway: Your Options Compared

Quick answer: A WooCommerce high risk payment gateway is a checkout plugin that will accept stores mainstream processors refuse, such as CBD, vape, adult, peptides, or supplements. Your options are a traditional high-risk merchant account connected through a gateway plugin, WooPayments or Stripe (which restrict most of these categories), or a specialist plugin from the WordPress.org directory, including ePayVista.

If you run WooCommerce and sell something a bank files under "high risk", the payment step is the part of your store most likely to break. This guide explains what makes a store high risk, compares the realistic options side by side, and walks through installing the ePayVista plugin.

What makes a WooCommerce store high risk?

"High risk" is a processor label, not a legal one. A store usually gets it for one or more of these reasons:

  • The product category. Card networks and processors keep lists of categories that need extra review or are not supported at all. CBD, vape, adult content, gambling, peptides, nutraceuticals, and some investment services show up on most of them.
  • Dispute exposure. Subscriptions, digital goods, and slow fulfilment tend to bring more chargebacks, and processors price that risk in.
  • Regulatory uncertainty. Products whose legal status depends on how they are labeled or where they ship get reviewed more often.
  • Thin history. A new store with no processing history and a fast sales ramp looks risky to an underwriter, even when the business is sound.

You can be fully legal and still be high risk. That is why so many store owners only find out after a review starts.

Why do WooPayments and Stripe close high-risk stores?

WooPayments is the payment method WooCommerce promotes by default. WooCommerce's own documentation says it is built in partnership with Stripe, and that signing up creates a Stripe Express account for your store. That means your store sits under two sets of rules.

The WooPayments prohibited and restricted products page lists, among others, adult content and services, tobacco products including e-cigarettes and vapes, pseudo-pharmaceuticals, supplements supported by unsubstantiated claims, and peptides and other research chemicals. It says merchants selling CBD must use Square or another named provider instead of WooPayments. It also states that if WooPayments becomes aware of prohibited activity, it may restrict or shut down the account.

Stripe's own prohibited and restricted businesses list (last updated 2026-09-22 when we checked) prohibits adult content and services and gambling, restricts CBD with negligible THC and tobacco products including e-cigarettes, and prohibits pseudo-pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims. The page says its lists are representative, not exhaustive.

So a store in these categories can be approved at signup and closed later, once a review catches up. If that has already happened to you, start with our guide to a WooCommerce Payments account suspended with payouts paused, and our breakdown of the Stripe restricted businesses list.

What are your WooCommerce high risk payment gateway options?

There are three realistic routes.

1. A traditional high-risk merchant account

A high-risk ISO or broker underwrites your business and boards you with an acquiring bank. On WooCommerce you then connect it through a gateway plugin, usually one built for a gateway such as Authorize.net (for example the Authorize.net extension on WooCommerce.com) or NMI.

  • Good for: stores that need full card acceptance worldwide and can pass underwriting.
  • Trade-offs: an application with documents and processing history, approval that takes days or weeks, monthly and per-transaction fees, and often a rolling reserve. Our posts on high-risk merchant account fees and rolling reserves cover the costs in detail.

2. WooPayments or the Stripe extension

Free to install and well integrated, but built on Stripe's rules. For the categories above, the prohibited list makes this a short-term option at best.

3. Specialist gateway plugins on WordPress.org

A newer group of plugins targets high-risk WooCommerce stores directly. Each one connects your checkout to a third-party service that runs the actual payment. Here is what four of them say on their own WordPress.org listings, as of November 2026. We have not tested these services; check each provider's terms before you install.

  • RizzPay for WooCommerce describes itself as a gateway for stores in CBD and hemp, peptides and research compounds, and supplements. The listing says it offers more than 180 payment methods at checkout, and that support runs through a Telegram channel. Version 0.1.5 at the time of writing, with about 20 active installs listed.
  • RiskPay Gateway lists cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ACH or SEPA transfers through third-party providers. The listing says there is no sign-up and no KYB, that payments are final, and that minimum order amounts vary by provider, starting from $1 for some. It shows about 600 active installs.
  • ShieldClimb Card Payment Gateway lists Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Google Pay, and Apple Pay, with no sign-up and no KYB, final payments, and per-provider minimums from $1. It can hide a provider at checkout when an order is below that provider's minimum or the region is unsupported. About 100 active installs listed.
  • LapinoPay is closer to a conventional gateway: you create a LapinoPay merchant account, which goes through registration, verification, and an interview, and the plugin goes live after approval. The listing mentions cards, multi-currency, refunds from a dashboard, and payouts on request. About 10 active installs listed.

None of these four listings publishes a per-transaction fee, so compare pricing on each provider's own site before you commit.

How is ePayVista different?

ePayVista is a WooCommerce high risk payment gateway built for CBD, vape, adult, gambling, forex, peptides, supplements, kratom, and similar stores.

  • Customers pay the way they already do: card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Checkout offers "Pay by card" (Stripe Link, US cards) and "Pay with Coinbase" (card, Apple Pay, or bank), both from $5 per order.
  • You are paid out instantly through our managed, non-custodial settlement layer, to an account only you control. We never hold your funds, so there is no balance for anyone to freeze.
  • Flat 1% per transaction. No monthly fee, no setup fee, no rolling reserve, no chargeback fee.
  • Payments settle final. There are no card disputes or chargebacks against you. If you choose to refund a customer, you pay it from your own funds.
  • No underwriting. Setup takes about 5 minutes.

Two honest limits. ePayVista is US-first: it is fully supported for US merchants selling to US customers, and card payments elsewhere are not guaranteed. And ePayVista is not the card processor: Stripe and Coinbase run the card step and decide declines, 3D Secure, ID checks, and supported countries. Confirm your products are legal where you sell them; this is not legal advice.

How do you install the ePayVista plugin on WooCommerce?

You need a self-hosted WordPress site with WooCommerce active and admin access. The full guide is on the download page.

  1. Get the plugin. Download the zip from /download, or search "ePayVista" under Plugins, Add New in your WordPress admin (it is listed on WordPress.org).
  2. Upload it. Go to Plugins, Add New Plugin, Upload Plugin, and choose the zip.
  3. Install and activate. Click Install Now, then Activate Plugin.
  4. Open the settings. Go to WooCommerce, Settings, Payments, and click ePayVista.
  5. Add your payout details and connect. Enter the payout details for an account only you control, click Save changes, then click Connect to ePayVista. Your account is set up automatically, with no separate signup.
  6. Enable and test. Turn the gateway on, run a small test order of at least $5, and confirm the payout arrives.

Building a custom checkout instead? The same service is available through a free REST API with signed webhooks, described on the API page.

FAQ

What is the best WooCommerce high risk payment gateway?

It depends on what you need. A high-risk merchant account gives broad card coverage but involves underwriting, fees, and often a reserve. A specialist plugin is faster to set up. Compare acceptance, fees, payout control, and dispute exposure.

Can I use WooPayments for CBD, vape, or peptides?

WooPayments' own policy page lists vapes, peptides and other research chemicals, and adult content as prohibited, and says CBD sellers must use Square or another named provider instead.

Do high-risk gateway plugins need a merchant account?

Some do and some do not. LapinoPay requires an approved account. RiskPay and ShieldClimb say on their listings that no sign-up is needed. ePayVista provisions your account when you click Connect.

Does ePayVista hold my money?

No. It is non-custodial. Funds go to an account only you control, at a flat 1% with no monthly fee, setup fee, or reserve.

Is ePayVista available outside the US?

It is fully supported for US merchants selling to US customers. Card payments elsewhere are not guaranteed. See the FAQ for details.
