Shopify Payments on Hold: What To Do When Your Payouts Are Paused

Quick answer: If Shopify Payments is on hold, read the notice for the stated reason, send every document requested the same day, and export your order and shipping records. Then fix the structure: any processor that pools and pays out your balance can pause it, so lasting protection means settled funds go straight to an account only you control.

Why do payouts get put on hold?

Platform payment providers use automated risk checks that pause payouts first and ask questions later. Common triggers include:

TriggerWhat it looks like
Sales spikeA launch, viral post, or holiday rush outside your normal pattern
Dispute activityMore chargebacks or refund requests than the provider expects
Product categoryItems the provider treats as restricted or elevated risk
Long delivery windowsPreorders, dropshipping, or made-to-order goods
Verification gapsIdentity, bank, or business details that do not match
Policy reviewA routine or automated account review

Most of these do not involve wrongdoing, which is why honest stores get caught.

What should I do this week?

  1. Read the notice. Note the exact reason, any case number, and the reply deadline.
  2. Answer in writing, fast. Send what is asked for: invoices, supplier receipts, tracking numbers, and ID. Keep it factual.
  3. Export your records. Download orders, customer messages, and shipping proof while you still have access.
  4. Check what new sales are doing. New orders may land in the same held balance.
  5. Add a second way to get paid before the review ends.

The pattern is the same as a Stripe shutdown or a Square freeze: the review timeline is not yours to control.

Can the provider keep a reserve on my money?

Many providers can hold back a share of sales for a period, or pause payouts, if their risk team thinks it is needed. The exact terms sit in your agreement, so read them and ask support in writing how long a hold or reserve is expected to last. Our guide to rolling reserves explains how they work.

Why does it keep happening?

Because when a provider receives your customers' payments, pools them, and pays you later, it controls the timing. It can hold, reserve, or reverse that balance. Moving to another balance-holding processor resets the clock, not the risk. See what to look for in a processor that will not freeze your account.

ePayVista settles through our managed, non-custodial settlement layer, our rails. Customers still pay by card at checkout. We do not custody your funds, so there is nothing sitting with us to hold. Today the plugin is built for WooCommerce stores. Targets must be legal businesses, and identity and business checks happen at onboarding.

Can I keep selling while the old balance is held?

If you run WooCommerce, yes: install the ePayVista plugin, run a small test order, and route new sales through it while the review plays out. Funds already held stay put until the provider releases them, but new revenue stops depending on that decision. Do not assume a release date.

FAQ

Why is Shopify Payments on hold with no warning?

Automated checks can pause payouts when they see unusual volume, disputes, long delivery times, or mismatched details. Check your email and admin notices, since warnings are not always sent first.

Will I get my held payout back?

Often, once the review is satisfied, but timing depends on your agreement and account history. Respond promptly and keep records. This is not legal advice, so talk to a lawyer about large disputed balances.

Can I open a second Shopify Payments account?

Providers usually link new applications to a restricted one, so a new login can be refused or held again. A different payment structure is more reliable than a different account.

Does ePayVista hold my money?

No. It is non-custodial. Funds settle to an account only you control.

What does ePayVista cost?

A flat 1%, with no monthly fee, setup fee, or reserve.
